PlayStation today has its position confirmed as the UK’s next-generation console of choice, with independent sales data revealing over one million PS4(TM) consoles have been purchased by UK consumers since it launched last November.
The sales data, provided by industry analysts GfK Chart Track, also revealed that PS4 has set a new record as the fastest ‘next gen’ console to reach one million sales in the UK. The millionth console was sold alongside Activision’s blockbuster Destiny, a completely new IP that offers a series of features and content completely exclusive to PS4. The news also follows the recent announcement that 10 million PS4s have been sold to consumers worldwide.
“The demand for PS4 has been enormous, and we’re thrilled with the response from UK gamers,” said Fergal Gara, VP and MD UK & Ireland, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “From day one, our sole focus has been making PS4 the best place to play, so we’re delighted that so many UK gamers have made it their next-gen console of choice. We’d like to thank them for their amazing support and feedback so far, and assure them that their PS4 experience will only get better in the months and years to come.”
PlayStation 4 was designed to provide a next generation, fully connected gaming experience. Since launch, UK gamers have created their own communities of rivals and friends on PSN, and, in just a few months, PS4 players in the UK alone have*:
Captured over 12 million videos of PS4 gameplay
Captured over 21 million images of PS4 gameplay
Shared over 500,000 gameplay images on Facebook and Twitter
Completed over 1.2 million broadcast sessions, totalling over 700,000 hours
As well as Destiny, PS4 will be home to the industry’s best selection of blockbuster titles going into the Christmas period. Grand Theft Auto V from Rockstar, FIFA 15 from Electronic Arts, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare from Activision, Assassin’s Creed Unity from Ubisoft, NBA 2K15 from 2K Games, DRIVECLUB, inFAMOUS First Light, and Little Big Planet 3 all from SCE Worldwide Studios, will be coming to PS4 before Christmas, as well as a series of standout independent games including Grim Fandango from LucasArts, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number from Dennaton Games and Minecraft from Mojang.
In addition to expanding the games library, the upcoming major update for PS4 is planned for later this year, bringing even more breakthrough gaming experiences. New Share Play for PS4 will allow players to invite a friend to join their game, even if they don’t own a copy of it themselves. Gamers can also use Share Play as a virtual controller pass, allowing friends to jump into a game and remotely assist them if they get stuck at a certain point.
Additionally, gamers will also be able to add to their PS4 system with the launch of PlayStation TV in the UK on 14th November. The smallest PlayStation platform ever made, PS TV will offer a perfect companion for PS4 to remotely play PS4 games, and supports a vast line-up of PlayStation Vita, PSP) (PlayStation Portable and original PlayStation games for gamers to download. PS4 Remote Play support extends playtime beyond the living room, with a unique ‘plug and play’ feature that lets you start your game in one room and finish it in another – making disputes over living room TV-time a thing of the past.
